Can Doing Less Help Us Live Better?

Booklets created by
Krys McInnis

Based on the book The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff.

Pupils examine ideas about living well through Taoism and The Tao of Pooh, questioning assumptions about busyness and success. Pupils develop a response through a short essay, presentation or piece of drama.

Pupils explore the Tao, simplicity, harmony and wu wei: action without unnecessary force. They consider pressure, overthinking and when to persist, adapt or step back, connecting these ideas with Taoist beliefs and practices.

Pupils interpret stories and symbols, prioritise philosophical questions, justify differing views and apply concepts to everyday situations. They distinguish personal views from Taoist perspectives and evaluate ideas when developing their final response.

About the text

The Tao of Pooh
Benjamin Hoff

Winnie-the-Pooh has a certain way about him, a way of doing things that has made him the world's most beloved bear, and Pooh's Way, as Benjamin Hoff brilliantly demonstrates, seems strangely close to the ancient Chinese principles of Taoism.
