King John and Magna Carta
Based on the book Magna Carta: The making & legacy of The Great Charter by Dan Jones.
The booklet explores why opposition to King John led the barons to demand Magna Carta, preparing pupils to write a short essay connecting his conduct, military losses, taxation and conflict with the Church.
Pupils examine John’s reputation, the loss of French lands, demands for money and his dispute with the Church. They explore the agreement at Runnymede, its limits on royal power, and the renewed war after John overturned it.
Pupils develop historical vocabulary and chronological understanding, explain causes and consequences, and make reasoned judgements about John’s character and decisions. They summarise their learning and select relevant points for an explanatory essay.
